Key differences
- Cobot palletizers handle 5–12 cycles/min; conventional palletizers: 12–40+ cycles/min
- Cobot palletizer installed cost: $50,000–$120,000; conventional: $100,000–$400,000+
- Cobot palletizers use 3–5 m² of floor space; conventional systems require 10–30+ m²
- Pallet pattern changes on a cobot palletizer take minutes (software); on a conventional system, hours to days
- For throughput above 15 cycles/min continuous, a conventional palletizer is usually the better fit

Cobot palletizer: how it works
A cobot palletizer typically uses a 20–35 kg payload collaborative robot arm (Universal Robots UR20, FANUC CRX-25iA, or Doosan H2515) mounted on a pedestal beside the infeed conveyor. Cases arrive from upstream on a conveyor; the cobot picks each case and places it on a pallet according to a programmed pattern. A pallet dispenser feeds empty pallets; a pallet conveyor or forklift removes full pallets.
Programming pallet patterns: Modern cobot palletizing software (Robotiq's Palletizing Solution, Vention's palletizing module, and others) provides a graphical interface where the operator defines the pallet dimensions, case dimensions, and pattern type (column, brick, pinwheel). The software calculates all pick-and-place positions automatically. Changeover to a new SKU or pattern typically takes 5–15 minutes.
Gripper for palletizing: Vacuum grippers (single or multi-cup) are standard for cartons and cases with flat top surfaces. For bags, a clamp-style gripper or bag-specific suction system is used. Vacuum grippers for palletizing typically use 2–4 large (Ø100–150 mm) cups and a venturi vacuum generator. See the vacuum gripper guide for sizing.
Throughput reality check: A cobot picking a 15 kg case with a standard 1.4 m reach travels approximately 2–3 seconds per pick. Including gripper actuation and conveyor synchronisation, 6–8 cycles/minute is a realistic production rate. The marketed "12 cycles/min" is achievable only with small, light cases, short travel, and optimised path programming.
Conventional palletizer types
Conventional palletizers are dedicated industrial robot or conveyor-based systems engineered for high throughput on fixed line configurations:
- Layer palletizer: Cases are arranged into a complete layer by infeed conveyors and then pushed onto the pallet as a unit. Very high throughput (20–60 layers/hour) but requires consistent case size and significant floor space and ceiling height.
- Robotic palletizer (industrial arm): A large articulated robot (FANUC M-410, Yaskawa MPL series, ABB IRB 760) with purpose-built palletizing EOAT. Throughput: 15–30 cases/minute. More flexible than layer palletizers; lower footprint. Requires safety cage.
- Mixed-case robotic palletizer: Vision-guided robotic palletizer for multiple case sizes. Highest integration cost ($250,000–$500,000+) but handles complex mixed-SKU loads automatically. Used in distribution centres rather than production lines.

The cobot palletizer cost advantage is real, particularly for small manufacturers who do not need 15+ cycles/minute. The conventional system pays for itself through higher throughput on high-volume, dedicated lines.
Decision framework
Choose a cobot palletizer if:
- Throughput requirement is under 12 cycles/min
- You run 3+ SKUs or frequently change pallet patterns
- Floor space is limited (<6 m² available)
- Capital budget is under $120,000
- Line layout may change in the next 2–3 years
- You want operators to manage changeovers without programmer support
Choose a conventional palletizer if:
- Throughput exceeds 15 cycles/min consistently
- You run one or two SKUs with rare changeovers
- Cases are heavy (>30 kg)
- The line is fully dedicated with no layout change expected
- You need 24/7 uptime with minimal maintenance
